  • GRAMMY winner -- Best Traditional Folk Grammy Award for Public
Domain: Songs from the Wild Land (from 2000)

  • “The ex-Blaster isn’t so much a mere mainstay of the LA root-rock
scene as its principal justification.” ~ Ron Garmon, Los Angeles City
    Beat

  • “I can’t speak too highly of Dave Alvin’s West of the West. He really
deserves to be recognized as one of America’s great voices.” ~ David
    Hepwoth, The Word (UK)

  • “Alvin’s own reverence for earlier musical standards makes him a
musician with a unique ability to peer into both past and present…his
deep-throated croon provides a rustic, whisky-soaked imprint that
imparts a clear sense of passion and purpose.” ~ Lee Zimmerman,
    Amplifier

  • “The songs on West of the West have already proven they can stand up
on their own; thanks to Alvin, they’ll carry on much longer.”
  • ~ Kurt Wolff, No Depression
DAVE ALVIN has rightfully been hailed as one of the best songwriters and guitarists of his generation, but his
career, both with
The Blasters and as a solo artist, has also shown him to be a musician with a unique sense of
history and a broad and deep knowledge of American songwriting; Variety called him a performer with “an
exquisite sense of place.”

The perfect combination of musician and material,
West Of The West  is Dave Alvin’s tribute to the songs and
songwriters of California. It’s the fourth generation Californian’s latest excursion into the sounds and history of
his home state, continuing the high standard he set with
King of California and Blackjack David. It’s Dave’s second
collection of cover songs; the first, 2000’s
Public Domain: Songs From The Wild Land, won a Grammy for Best
Traditional Folk Album. For
West Of The West, Dave has drawn from the work of songwriters both well known and
obscure; what holds them together is that they were either born or grew up in California. The album mixes much
loved songs by JACKSON BROWNE, JERRY GARCIA and ROBERT HUNTER, Los Lobos’ DAVID HIDALGO and
LOUIS PEREZ, MERLE HAGGARD, JOHN FOGERTY, TOM WAITS and BRIAN WILSON with unearthed gems
from such overlooked talents as RICHARD BERRY, BLACKIE FARRELL, KATE WOLF and JIM RINGER,
songwriters who Dave honors for helping to keep the West Coast folk scene alive in the late 60s and 70s. There’s
even
“Between The Cracks,” a song Dave co-wrote with singer-songwriter TOM RUSSELL.

A deeply felt and emotionally honest portrait of a place that is both shining example and scrap-yard of the
American Dream,
West Of The West is a record that only Dave Alvin could have made

  • "It's possible, even probable that any time you see Gilbert in person his songs will make you
laugh and cry simultaneously." ~ Ft. Worth Star-Telegram
  • "Gilbert's burnished voice poured over one purling, liquid melody after another, over an
accompaniment of tender arpeggios and supple chord progressions." ~ The Chicago Tribune
  • "He does not duck hard truths and never succumbs to the temptation to tie his points up in
neat platitudes or truisms." ~ The Boston Globe
  • "His lyrics are highly personal, his tenor vocals fluid and enthralling" ~ Dirty Linen
  • "He has the voice of an angel -- a very powerful angel -- and the humor and spirit of an imp"
    ~  Carey Driscoll (AcousticMusicSanDiego)
Vance Gilbert burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90's when
the buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an
ex-multicultural arts teacher and jazz singer who was knocking 'em dead at
open mics. The word spread of this Philadelphia-area born and raised
performer to New York;
Shawn Colvin invited Vance Gilbert to be a special
guest on her Fat City tour. Gilbert took audiences across the country by
storm ("With the voice of an angel, the wit of a devil, and the guitar playing
of a god, it was enough to earn him that rarity: an encore for an opener"
wrote the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram in its review of a show from that tour.)

This will be Vance's third show at AcousticMusicSanDiego.  He first
appeared at AMSD in FEB 2004 -- on the closing night of the Folk Alliance
held here for the first time -- with his friend
ELLIS PAUL, and they ripped
the roof off the place.  We then had the good fortune of a solo Vance show
in APR 2005, but his gig as the opening act for
George Carlin (RIP, George!)
for the last 3-4 years has made it impossible for us to get him back for
another show until now.
After seven CD's of original tunes, Gilbert's last album -- comprised of covers of songs written and recorded by some
of the all-time greats -- seemed both fitting and fearless. Never one to shy away from taking chances, he again
displayed his vocal virtuosity with some unexpected choices from the late 20th century songbook.

Now, he's touring on the release of his new album,
Up On Rockfield.

This is Vance Gilbert at his most timeless, compelling best. Whether with classic original songwriting or ageless
interpretations of covers, his is a presentation steeped in deep humanism and bravery, stunning artistry and soul, and
unbridled joy - inarguably the blue ribbons that tie and seal the seemingly impossible package that is . . . . . . Vance
Gilbert.
